With Christmas lights switch-ons still being negotiated, we’ve rounded up some fabulously festive lights displays within 90 minutes drive of Calderdale.
Pack some hot chocolate, snuggle up in the car and set off to find some beautiful Christmas lights displays.
RHS Harlow Carr – Glow Winter Illuminations
Thurs-Sat November 19-December 19 & Mon-Wed December 21-30, 2020
Combine a lovely winter walk with enchanting illuminations around magnificent trees and shrubs. You’ll see the Queen Mother’s Lake, Winter Walk and Kitchen Garden all glow with festive colour.
4.30-8.30pm. Tickets must be pre-booked. Adults: £6.95 (members)/£12 non-members. Children: £3.50 (members)/£6.50 (non-members). Under 5’s go free.

Stockeld Park – Winter Illuminations

Watch the Enchanted Forest come to life after dusk and transform into a twinkling winter wonderland! There are dazzling light effects, a captivating soundscape and animated installations that come together through almost a mile of beautiful woodland.

Yorkshire Wildlife Park – Lightopia
Fri, Sat, Sun November 20 -December 11, 2020. Daily from December 12, 2020 (not Christmas Day) – January 10, 2021.
Enchanting lantern display featuring over 1.5 miles of lit pathways. There are giant lanterns themed as animals, mystical creatures, Jurassic dinosaurs and more.
You’ll find a kaleidoscope of colour among the magical sculptures, tunnels of light and festive food and drink.

Lightopia Festival Manchester
November 20, 2020 – January 3, 2021
A beautiful trail of hand-sculptured lanterns, cherry-picked from across the globe. Walk through the park following the magical illuminated trail and explore interactive exhibits, Christmas showcase – with Santa’s sleigh and glistening snowflakes – Astronomy display and Musical City, as well as the antler-framed arch of the Love Gate, Tree of Life and Lakeside water show.

Music & Lights at Fountains Abbey
Weekends in December 2020
Watch the abbey ruins glow with bright and colourful lights when the afternoon light starts to fade.
Last entry to the estate is 4pm. Live choirs and bands won’t appear this year, but pre-recorded music will be playing. Bring a torch! Adults: £13, child: £6.50, family ticket: £32.50.

Castle Howard – Wish Upon a Frozen Star
November 28-December 31, 2020
Jack Frost has cast an icy spell and turned the Walled Gardens into a winter wonderland, lit up by festive illuminations and immersive soundscapes. You’ll see an epic story projected as a light show onto the facade of the house too.

Lightwater Valley – Alice in Winterland Christmas Lights Trail
Weekends from 21st November 2020. Daily from 19th December 2020
Lose yourself in this enchanting twilight adventure with Alice, the Mad Hatter, Cheshire Cat, Tweedle Dee, Tweedle Dum, Humpty Dumpty and their friends.
You’ll find a life-sized chessboard with an Alice Pawn and see giant illuminated light sculptures illustrating all your favourite stories from Alice in Wonderland.
Pre-booking essential. £12. 50 per person. Age 2 and under go free. 1-7pm except Fridays: 4-8pm. Some traditional fairground rides open.
